Pathetic
Late Than Never
July 14, 2020
At long last, the Washington, DC professional football
mercenaries – who we have long referred to as the Washington
Racists – are jettisoning their despicable name and logo. The replacement has yet
to be determined, but finally the front office, i.e. the recalcitrant owner,
has relented and officially announced the long-overdue retirement of the
disgraceful moniker that has been the target of protest for decades. The owner
said, as recently as 2013, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER
– you can use caps.” Welcome to NEVER.
Unsurprisingly, the last straw was the team’s largest investors
applying the most American pressure of all. This, despite the fact that beginning
in 1968 the National Congress of American Indians launched a campaign to
eliminate insulting and harmful stereotypes of indigenous peoples perpetuated
by media and popular culture. Of particular concern was the continued use of
racist and derogatory “Indian” sports mascots, logos and symbols; of which
there is probably no more overt and shameless example than the one at issue
here, it being analogous to the “n” word, though without the obviously warranted social stigma
of the latter.
Apparently stealing the land, committing genocide on the people
and ignoring treaty after treaty, most of which continues to this day, was not
destructive and degrading enough.
The Paying Attention
team has voted on our choice to replace the old name, and they don’t even have
to change too much. Plus, it would provide at least a pretense of remorse.
We give you the
Washington, DC Rednecks:
They would only need to keep it for 87 years or
so, and
if some people object, it can be changed at that time
Liberté, égalité, fraternité.
if some people object, it can be changed at that time
This has been your Paying Attention
Thought For The Day.
You're welcome.
What is your thought
for the day?
