No Country For Original Inhabitants

Today is a federal holiday – some banks are closed, no mail. Some government offices are closed…check that, most government offices are closed because Boss/Baby Trump and his malignant minions shut the government down rather than keep millions of Americans from either losing their health insurance or having their premiums go through the roof. All in service to Trump’s ego and transferring money from real people to millionaires.

Any way you look at it is a disgraceful holiday. It has been known as Columbus Day, and more recently, among the more intelligent, Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus, who never actually set foot on continental North America, had no idea where the fuck he was and is the poster child for illegal immigrant crime. Unlike the typical immigrant living in America or attempting to do so today.

Columbus brought disease, murder, greed and took prisoners to make them slaves. By all means let’s celebrate this asshole. I guess we should be thankful that the attack on Fort Sumpter isn’t a national, or even a state, holiday.

An Individual More Deserving Of A Day Bearing His Name

Lenni-Lenape chief Tamanend was a peacemaker who signed peace treaties with William Penn beginning in 1863. Tamanend’s monument stands in one of the least visible, least accessible spots in all of Philadelphia.

There is allegedly a plan to relocate this stunning statue away from its current insulting location at an interstate entrance ramp. A stone’s throw from Tamaned is the shamefully renamed Delaware Avenue – named for the Delaware Tribe – now called, you guessed it – Columbus Boulevard. Pathetic.

Naturally, our make-believe president managed to find a way to make matters worse…and dumber with an official proclamation making October 13, 2025 “Columbus day”, adding

Someone should tell Dear Leader that Columbus was not an American of any kind, just the first and worst illegal immigrant to Turtle Island (aka Columbusland…I mean America).

So today, your thoughts should not turn to the usurper Columbus for anything but scorn, but instead to the victims of his assault on this long-inhabited land. Columbus brought little but disrespect, pain and death to the original inhabitants of this part of the world, and those who followed him across the ocean only continued his depredations. Yes, all this accrued to the benefit of our immigrant ancestors, and to us, but the shame at the heart of our good fortune has not been atoned. America still has not formally acknowledged its original sin – the one that predated the second sin of slavery. 

We as a country have yet to make amends for either, choosing instead to not learn from history. In fact our current administration is hell bent on erasing history and rewriting it to be more sociopathically inaccurate. And that’s putting it mildly. Let’s just hope we never have to deal with a Trump Day.
